Até a Copa do Mundo de 2010 Neuer era considerado uma das maiores promessas do futebol alemão. Apesar de o Schalke 04 não ter sido um time muito regular em 2011, foi neste ano que Manuel se firmou como um goleiro de classe mundial.
Desde início, Neuer já era considerado um prodígio no Schalke 04, onde está desde os cinco anos. Presença freqüente nas seleções de base, ele ganhou a camisa titular do clube de Gelsenkirchen com apenas 20 anos e tornou-se um substituto para Jen Lehmann. Em 2007, um ano depois de se tornar goleiro do clube, Neuer foi eleito o melhor goleiro da Bundesliga (campeonato alemão). Não é qualquer m que consegue isso aos 21 anos!

Vários grandes times europeus, como Liverpool e Manchester United tentaram contratá-lo Mas ele preferiu continuar na Bundesliga e assinou com o gigante Bayern de Munique no fim desta temporada.
Mas a vida não tem sido fácil para o goleiro depois da mudana de clube. A transferência já foi cercada de muitas polêmicas. A parte mais radical da torcida bávara até hoje ainda não aceita o goleiro, e chegou ao ponto de entregar-lhe um “manual de conduta”, proibindo-o até de comemorar com os torcedores no final dos jogos. Agra, mais do que nunca Neuer precisará provar que é o melhor goleiro da Alemanha para viver conquistar os torcedores no seu novo time.
